Managerial Success Study: Versatility Links to Performance

Recent research by TRACOM proves the link between Versatility and managerial performance. The study shows that Versatility is an important element of overall success comparable to intelligence, previous work experience and personality.

What’s Versatility?

Versatility is closely related to the concept of social or emotional intelligence. The level of Versatility indicates a person’s ability to adjust his or her behaviors in each situation in order to gain the approval and support of coworkers, thereby maximizing productivity.

How Versatility Links to Performance

In May 2005, TRACOM researchers studied 127 managers within an international publishing company to determine whether Versatility influenced performance. Statistical analysis revealed a strong correlation between Versatility and all 47 measured factors of job performance, including  “ability to work well within a team,” “ability to effectively manage conflict,” “initiative” and “commitment.”  Managers with high Versatility consistently outperformed managers with low Versatility. For example, the study showed that they are:

  • 27% better at leading teams
  • 25% better at coaching others
  • 19% more likely to be promoted
